We often assume that our poor shots are always caused by some inherent swing fault…

Maybe it’s our across-the-line backswing, or the shaft being too steep on the downswing.

We chop and change things, aiming to ‘feel’ our way to a better position, only to find that when we see our swing it doesn’t appear to be any different between a great shot and a crap one.

Something I realised recently when being custom-fitted by Mark, was that simply having the right combination of shaft and head, I was able to completely change the path that my club approached the ball on.

My high flippy hook became a powerful soft draw in a matter of minutes.

My swing and club path had changed, despite the fact it felt the same to me!

As Mark explained, this was due to the new weight of the golf club in my hand leading to my body finding a more efficient way to move through impact.

I find the same often happens when I work with a client in the gym.

They’ve spent years hitting the same weak slice over and over again…

And assumed it’s just because they’ve spent years repeating a golf swing that resembles a lumberjack chopping down a tree.

We usually find it’s actually more to do with their inability to ROTATE their body in their hips, upper back, and shoulders.

Forced to compensate for this they’ve spent years just swinging their arms…

But it’s like a boxer trying to knock out an opponent sitting on an office chair that spins…

A whole lot of effort is expended but without much of an end result.

With a combination of low level mobility exercises performed during their warm-ups and rest periods, and higher level strength exercises that help them hold onto this mobility long term…

…this issue usually takes care of itself.

What were once 200-yard drives, become 250-yard rockets due to the fact they’re now able to actually turn their bodies!

So whilst I’m definitely not saying that working on our technique isn’t important…

It might not be the only thing that’ll help.

The best golfers in the world are that because they’re the best through the impact zone.

Luckily we can all get better at that in many different ways.

And improving the setup of your golf clubs, and what your body is capable of are just 2 of those.
