Golf Irons

The Golf Iron might be the most central and integral part of a golfers bag. Golf irons come in many different forms this can be blades, cavity back, hybrid style and combo sets. As with all golf clubs it's crucial to understand what is the correct match for your golf game.

Choosing the right set of golf irons for you is crucial and can drastically improve your game. Irons are what you will hit the majority of any approach shot you have.

An iron set normally is made up of seven or eight irons all of these will hit the balls different distances due to the change in loft and the length of shaft. Lower numbered irons i.e. four and five irons hit the ball further whereas an eight or nine iron will hit it a lot shorter. You should expect to see around a 10 yard gapping between each iron.

When choosing the correct set of irons for you, its important to find one that matches your current skill level. This can be done if understand what different types of golf irons offer.

Forged Blades and Cavity Blades - These irons are often seen as the most beautiful golf irons and offer the best feel and control of any. However as compensation for this any misshits see a massive drop off in performance. These irons are usually used by professionals and lower handicappers as they want the ability to have more control on shot they are having.

Hollow or Foam Filled - These irons are a newer addition to the market and were first seen in the 2000's. The hollow bodied irons were popularised by brands like Mizuno while the foam filled irons were first used by brands such as TaylorMade and Titleist. Normally the head is slightly larger than forged blades however they still offer a cavity blade like appearance. Although the hollow or foam filled irons have a lot stronger loft range and higher launching characteristics while still maintaining a lot of that feel you get from blades. These are usually used by mid-low handicappers.

Cast Game Improvement Irons - These are the types of irons most popular throughout the average golfers bag. Aimed at handicaps from low to mid and mid to high the clubhead is larger than a blades and offers great performance on off-centre strikes.

Super Game Improvement - These offer the most forgiveness on the market of any golf irons. They have the biggest head size as a way to inspire confidence for a golfer when address the golf ball. These irons are mostly used by mid-high handicappers.

Combo Sets - Also known as mixed or blended golf iron sets combine different types of irons within the same set. The aim of this is to provide forgiveness, distance and control. Combo sets will allow golfers to maximise their performance with their irons all the way through their bag. For example a golfer might play game improvement irons in their long irons (3i, 4i, 5i) which will give them more forgiveness and distance. Then in their shorter irons (7i 8, 9i,) play a players iron or cavity blade giving them more control and workability with irons that are normally easier to hit.
