If you have a favourite golf club that you love to put your Fujikura shafts through their paces on, you might want to spend as much time as you can there putting merrily away, since it seems that clubs are closing down all over the country.
According to The Golf Business, at least eight clubs have shut their doors in the last month, including Letham Grange Golf Club in Scotland, Hilltop Golf Course in Birmingham, Moore Place Golf Club in Surrey and Carswell Golf Club in Oxfordshire.
In the last few days, meanwhile, four more clubs have closed, including Stanmore and Edgware Golf Centre, which has shut up shop for good. And Hertfordshire’s Bushey Hall Golf Club will be shut for two years so its clubhouse can be converted into 32 flats.
And in Scotland, the 118-year-old Polmont Golf Club announced it was closing over social media as a result of financial difficulties.
A statement read: “It is with deep regret that we have to inform [you] of this news, however, please note that Polmont Golf Club will cease trading from Monday 7th October. Unfortunately, the financial position that the club finds itself in brings the committee to the conclusion that the club cannot continue to operate.”
It seems that this could be down to falling membership numbers, with the Golf Participation Report for Europe 2017 recently revealing that there were 192,533 registered golfers in Scotland in 2016, a drop of 6,711 on the previous year - or 3.37 per cent.
