The Golf Wedge has often been referred to as the scoring club in a golf bag therefore its crucial that you have the right wedge setup in your golf bag. In order to maximise your golf wedge game its crucial to get golf wedges that compliment your existing iron set makeup and also fit your chipping and pitching style.
It's now common practice to carry four different golf wedges in a bag. These are commonly referred to as
Pitching Wedge (44° - 48°)
Gap / Approach Wedge (50° - 54°)
Sand Wedge (54° - 58°)
Lob Wedge (58° - 64°)
It is common practice to have a four degree gapping between each wedge to allow for the perfect distance on each wedge and reduces the the number of half shots needed.
The other aspect to take into account with golf wedges is the degree of bounce each wedge has. Most golf wedges have two numbers on the sole. One of which is the loft the other is the degree of bounce. This is important on all your wedges but is especially important on your sand and lob wedge as these the wedges you will be using for trickier shots such as chips, pitches and bunker shots. The bounce of a wedge is simply the amount of sole that sits off the ground at address. The lower the bounce angle the less of the club will sit off the ground. The more bounce the more of the club will sit off the ground.
A higher bounce wedge is typically better for golfers with a stepper attack angle and tend to dig into the ground with their pitch shots. They can also be useful for golfers who regularly play in wet conditions. The higher bounce wedges will stop the golf wedge digging into the ground too much.
Lower bounce wedges are typically better for firmer turf, tighter lies and golfers who are more shallow on their attack angle. Lower bounce wedges are normally played by golfers who have a stronger short game.
